The American Staffordshire Terrier Canada of Canada

Worldwide, the American Staffordshire Terrier has been subject to breed bans that target the Bull and
Terrier family in response to well-publicized incidents involving pit bulls or similar dog breeds.
This legislation ranges from outright bans on possession to restrictions and conditions of ownership.
The appropriateness and effectiveness of breed-specific legislation in preventing dog-related fatalities and injuries is disputed.

BANNED AID 2019

On behalf of Banned Aid 2019, along with PC MPP David Piccini, we are happy to announce a proposed Bill,
that will repeal the breed specific language contained in the Dog Owners Liability Act.

This has been a long hard fight in Ontario, but we are finally seeing a light at the end of the tunnel.

We need your participation!

Please sign the petition and share far and wide.

We need as many Ontario signatures as possible.

Acquire as many signatures as you can from family, friends, co-workers, etc.
and send the signed documents to David Piccin's office.

Thank you to MPP David Piccini for meeting with us and hearing our voices.

David is a dog lover himself and understands the injustices to the dog owners of Ontario.

Now do a happy dance and get signing and sharing!

IMMEDIATE RELEASE - MONTREAL, QUEBEC SEPTEMBER 19, 2016

Why is Montreal banning breeds that are rare?

The proposal to ban three breeds in the City of Montreal’s 19 boroughs is disturbing. There is no evidence to support the belief that they there are dangerous breeds. There is evidence showing that individual dogs, often owned by inexperienced or callous people, can be dangerous. Read more (link to the Legislative Page)

Unfortunately, dog bit statistics aren’t statistics, and my collection of dog bites by breed is inaccurate because it is based on guesswork. Breed is a term with a specific meaning that is used incorrectly by many people, even among those who are involved with dogs. A dog is a member of a breed, if he can trace his ancestry back to when his breed was recognized in an unbroken line through a pedigree. Any other dog is a mongrel. In Canada, all three of the breeds usually named in these types of laws are so uncommon that most people will never see a purebred example of any of them.

Above is a document showing number of dogs registered by the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) for all of Canada and Quebec separately during the past ten years. The CKC is a federally accredited agency that registers purebred dogs under the Animal Pedigree Act. The American Pit Bull Terrier is registered with United Kennel Club (UKC) and the American Dog Breeders’ Association (ADBA), as well as the Canadian Livestock Records Corporation, another federal agency under the auspices of Agriculture Canada.

The government should be responsible and proactive with an approach similar to Calgary’s Responsible Pet Ownership By-Law. Being one of the most respected By-Laws, it teaches people what is expected of them and rewards owners for good behavior. Those who do not meet the community standards are dealt with regardless of the type, breed or size of pet.

A full risk assessment should be conducted by the city of Montreal to assess the danger of fatality and bites from the proposed rare banned breeds and types of dogs.

Bans and other unfair laws are ineffective and costly plus they lead to distrust of government officials, especially at the municipal level.
